Splicer Stuff

Cosplay, Drawings and Stuff

Decided to finally take on this project (been in my head for a while) after I found some blue overalls for sale at an op shop with some yellow material in the same shop. Found that the overalls were too small for my height so I took it as a sign from the Cosplay gods :P

Turning overalls into a coat was easier than I thought it would be, just cut along the inside leg seams and hem all the edges (obviously cut the leg parts to the length you want your coat to be).

This is pretty much my first large-ish sewing project where I did the whole thing myself (the only other one I’ve done is a newsboy hat from a pattern). Found out the yellow material I bought was stretchy, gave me quite a struggle with the numbers and I’m not quite happy with it but not enough to re-do it right away :P

The yellow stripe on the front and the right side of the collar (not really visible here, take my word that it looks like crap), I will unpick and re-do so it goes further down and the neck will be more of a ring shape…

Again, any suggestions or questions would be great :D

Merc Adventurer Outfit
The vest is now done and I have some ammo pouches for the bandolier belt. My normal belt isn’t quite long enough to sit comfortably so, temporarily, I’ve attached two old belts together.

The hat I got a while ago and the goggles are part of my normal stuff collection :P

I have some leather and shoulder armour to attach to the shirt, thinking of cutting the sleeve open and sewing the leather onto the elbows and wrist and then haphazardly sewing it back up to give that “old and used” look.

Once I’ve gotten the pants and attached knees to them I’ll give everything a good going over with sandpaper :D

As always, any suggestions would be appreciated :)

Okay yea..

I realize I haven’t updated anything in a long time… This is for two reasons:

Reason number 1: I realized I am way too… large and… ugly to pull off a Stein costume. I just thought it looked a bit stupid on me, especially when I tried on the turtle-neck part..

Reason number 2: I haven’t really worked on a whole lot of costume stuff. I have been doing a lot of research and stuff (after I dropped Stein) and accidentally re-ignited my Fallout obsession.

So now I am actively working on a Fallout costume, specifically the Fallout Merc Adventurer outfit.
So far it is actually coming along rather well (for once).
I’ve almost finished the black vest, made by cutting the sleeves off of a suit jacket.
I’ve also got some ammo pouches for the bandolier belt, a red shirt to use in place of the red jumper (got the idea from Ben in Fallout Nuka Break, way too warm in Australia for a jumper). Found some skating pads from an op shop and tore the solid plastic part off to use for the shoulders on the shirt. Going to use some scrap leather for the elbow and wrist pieces. I’ve already got a Traders cap and goggles to use so all that’s really left to get are some pants to cut up, sew back together and put knee pads on. Got some jungle combat boots to wear with it as well and, with a couple of smaller accessories, that’s pretty much the costume done :D

My friend came over today and we started work on the design specifics for the Hunting Rifle prop I’ll have with the costume. Most of the gun will be made from PVC pipe, the stock and whatever-you-call-the-rest-of-that-part will be cut from wood. I even found a cheep scope online to attach to it.

I’m actually really excited about this, I haven’t ran into any of the usual road blocks where I stumble over my own feet :P
It seems to be coming together nicely

Stein Update Number 3

Well this’ll be the last weekend I can work on this costume, my friends party is next weekend. The collar has been knitted, I don’t know if the other part of the sweater will be done in time, and I’ve started on the screw head. Had to saw apart a big wooden noise maker thing I bought at the Gawler Show, hot glue parts of it into a cylindrical cardboard box I cut to size. Planning on getting the headband and PVC pipe for the rest of the screw tomorrow and have that finished quickly.
I’ll try and get some photos later today.

I’ve also got to make a sith robe for my friend for the same party, looks like I’ll have a busy weekend :P

See I said I’d put photos up
It could be better but not without restarting the whole thing…

Stein Update Number 2

Finished the stitching on the coat.
I sewed it slightly wrong so it puffs out a bit and looks slightly odd, but it’s alright I guess.

Found that it is sooo much easier to sew yarn into material with a needle rather than poking it through each hole :P

I’ll have photos up as soon as I can get someone to wield the camera for me

Up next: the screw

A friend gave me some yarn yesterday so I’ve started on the stitches now! I noticed that in the anime, his coat appears to have staples while they are stitches in the manga. No idea how I’d do staples so I went with the stitches :P
I pretty much don’t have any sewing supplies so I’m just poking holes with this little metal pole thing I found and trying to push the yarn through those holes…. So far this method is not working the best, very time consuming but it’s all I’ve got until I can get to my grandparents place to borrow a darning needle or something…
The yarn keeps tearing and unraveling so I’m not really sure it’ll hold all that well, but I guess we’ll see what happens once I’ve sewn the rest of the coat together.
Gonna start on the pockets before I do more of the big stitches I think…

Walmart sells needles for $1-2 a pack, of various sizes. Get a pack of large eyed needles with a sharp point. Also, a dab of glue/clear nailpolish/fraycheck on the end of the yarn will prevent it unraveling.

Thanks for the tip but I’m flat broke at the moment :PAlso, I live in the land down under and we don’t have Walmart I could check Spotlight

I attempted to draw Stein! Figure I should try and gain some familiarity with the character that I’m cosplaying…. Haven’t coloured/shaded anything in a while so this was interesting.
This is where I’d usually like to say “don’t steal this, it’s my drawing” and all that stuff but I don’t think anybody would want it anyway… Also if you’re gonna steal a picture I doubt you’d care that someone asked you not to in the text :P

Stein Update Number 1 (I guess)

Hey look, progress of some desciption!

I managed sew a lab coat with minimal materials, an incredibly simple sewing machine, no pattern and virtually no experience! Go me!

Most fun I’ve had in ages. I’m fairly happy with it but I know, now that I’ve done this, that I can use the issues that popped up to make an EVEN BETTER ONE
All going well I can even make it closer to Stein’s lab coat.

In slightly-other-while-still-related news, my grandmother had a look at some pictures of Stein that I printed off and she says she’d be happy to knit the turtleneck parts of his T-shirt.
I’ve also bought a “noise maker” and a cylindrical cardboard box to use for the screw. I found out last night that the noisy bugger is too long to fit in the box properly so… Not the best, but better than nothing :D
